Tuesday, October 22, 2024
6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. CST

In this one-hour course, dental hygienists will gain a comprehensive understanding of the clinical choices involved in selecting the most appropriate slow speed handpieces and polishing pastes. The course will provide a detailed comparison between the cosmetic and therapeutic benefits of various polishing pastes, focusing on key ingredients and their effects on patient outcomes. Participants will explore the Selective Polishing Theory, learning how to explain this essential concept to patients in a way that promotes optimal oral health. The course will also cover the importance of choosing the right prophy paste grit for each procedure, clarifying why the use of coarse grit alone is not always the best option. Additionally, the course will delve into the differences between corded and cordless slow speed handpieces, emphasizing the significance of RPMs (rotations per minute) in achieving desired results. Attendees will also learn best practices for maintaining slow speed handpieces, ensuring their longevity and performance. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to combine handpiece speed with the ideal polishing paste to maximize both patient comfort and clinical efficacy. This knowledge will allow hygienists to make informed decisions that enhance patient care and satisfaction

Objectives:

  • Compare the cosmetic vs. the therapeutic benefits of polishing pastes, including ingredients
  • Discuss the Selective Polishing Theory and how to explain the concept to patients
  • Differentiate polishing grits of prophy pastes; why they vary, and the best procedures for utilization (Why course grit only is not the answer?)
  • Compare corded vs. cordless slow speed handpieces and why RPMs are important
  • List the maintenance steps of slow speed handpieces
  • Discuss the combination of handpiece speed and polish choice
