Cutting Wedge Technology: an In-Depth Look at the Importance of Wedges in Direct Composite Restorations
Wednesday, August 4, 2021
6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. CST
Despite advances in sectional matrix and ring technology, Class II restorations continue to be a hurdle in everyday dentistry. A closer look shows how a forgotten component unlocks the secret for everyday success: the wedge. Discover how a simple device will forever change your approach to direct restorations, enhance results, and drive profitability and efficiency.
- Identify and define variables that determine Class II difficulty levels and outcome predictability.
- Identify commonly encountered Class II failure points: margins, contacts, and contour.
- Take an in-depth look into the importance of proper wedging and why current wedge designs are hindering our success.
- Introduce a new split wedge technology that enhances outcome, improves efficiency, and boosts confidence.
- Introduce a device that will change how practitioners approach and restore small to mid-size lesions.

Dr. Matthew Burton, DDS
Dr. Matthew Burton, DDS has worked as an established dental practitioner in Illinois since 2008. Like most dentists, his schedule was filled with one of the most common procedures: the Class II composite restoration. After several years in his practice working on hundreds of fillings, Dr. Burton became frustrated with the available Class II matrix systems. He tried nearly every ring system, but none of them provided the efficiency and consistent results he was seeking. He found that the difficulty lies in properly placing and wedging the matrix bands. If not performed correctly, it cost him valuable time, required unnecessary post polymerization adjustments, and ultimately led to a lack of confidence in the procedure.
Dr. Burton began contemplating new ideas to make his chair-side time more efficient. He discovered that he could simplify the matrix system by attaching a smaller matrix to a modified wedge that was split down the middle. The flexible Split Wedge allows for proper contour, and an opposing Force Wedge effectively holds the matrix in place, while creating separation without the use of a cumbersome ring.
The BurtonBands Anterior Matrix System has a similar background. Dr. Burton found that the matrices available in the marketplace were often inefficient, unpredictable and frustrating to use. He created a similar wedge and matrix combination that provides proper contour and better access than other matrix systems.
With no other products like it on the market, Dr. Burton knew there would be demand for his matrix systems. In 2017, he formed Burton Dental Innovations to begin marketing and selling his products to other dentists who face the same challenges in their own practices.
Despite launching Burton Dental Innovations, Dr. Burton is still a practicing dentist. This provides him with the opportunity to continue to develop new products that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of current dental procedures.
