Program Overview

Maintaining peri‑implant health requires a proactive, prevention‑centered approach supported by structured clinical decision‑making. In this evidence‑based program, Dr. Irina Dragan integrates the principles of peri‑implant disease prevention with PerioDT‑guided diagnostic pathways and modern non‑surgical periodontal therapy options.

Participants will learn how to identify risk factors before implant placement, detect early signs of peri‑implant mucositis, and implement non‑surgical interventions that can stabilize peri‑implant tissues and reduce disease progression. Through case‑based learning and practical algorithms, this course equips clinicians with the tools to prioritize prevention, intervene early, and support long‑term implant success.

About Your Presenter

Dr. Irina Dragan is an American Board of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry certified clinician and examiner. Dr. Dragan received her first Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from Carol Davila University (Romania) and the second one from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM). She is part-time faculty in postgraduate periodontics at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and an adjunct associate professor of periodontology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM). She has published more than 45 research papers, written five chapters in dental textbooks, and is the Co-editor of “Newman and Carranza’s Essentials of Clinical Periodontology: An Integrated Study Companion”. She currently serves as Editor of the Periodontology Section of Compendium Continuing Education in Dentistry.

Dr. Dragan is the recipient of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Tarrson Fellowship award, given to an outstanding periodontist for research. She has also received the Presidential Citation from the American Dental Education Association and was honored with the Tufts University Provost’s Award for Outstanding Teaching Service. The interdisciplinary team she led at TUSDM was honored by the Academy of Osseointegration with the Applied Clinical Science Research. Most recently, she received the Massachusetts Dental Society “10 Under 10” award for her contributions to the field of periodontology. Her clinical practice is limited to periodontology and implant dentistry at The Perio Studio, in downtown Boston, MA.

Implement prevention‑focused protocols before, during, and after implant placement to minimize the development of peri‑implant disease.
Recognize early clinical indicators of peri‑implant mucositis to enable timely, minimally invasive intervention.

Apply non‑surgical periodontal therapy options for peri‑implantitis, including mechanical debridement, air‑polishing systems, laser‑assisted therapy, and adjunctive antimicrobials.
Integrate PerioDT decision‑trees to determine when non‑surgical therapy is indicated, when to reassess, and when escalation to surgical care is appropriate.
Communicate prevention and maintenance strategies to patients in ways that improve adherence and long‑term implant health.
