The Effects of Adjunctive Use of a Desiccant Agent in the Treatment of Stage III Periodontitis
SRP alone vs. SRP with desiccant
Compared to scaling and root planing alone, those who received scaling and root planing + PerioDT demonstrated a highly significant reduction (P < 0.001) in the following areas:
Conclusion
The results of the study found that applying a desiccant gel as an adjunctive therapy with SRP was significantly effective in the management of stage three periodontitis. The study concluded with the suggestion that the desiccant can be a safer alternative to conventional treatment that can aid in decreasing plaque biofilm without causing bacterial resistance.

Study Summary
Twenty-five stage 3 periodontitis patients were chosen to participate in a study comparing treatment outcomes for SRP+ desiccant treated patients to those who received SRP alone. The patients’ probing pocket depth (PPD), relative attachment level (RAL), plaque index (PL1), gingival index (GI), gingival height (GH), and bleeding on probing index (BOP) were recorded immediately after treatment, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after receiving treatment.
